The goal of the Immigrant Women and Welfare Project is to document the experiences of immigrant women as they move from welfare to work under California's new welfare program (CalWORKS). ERA will conduct a study on the effect of CalWORKS by conducting individual face-to-face interviews with 150 single women heads of household. The study will be conducted in Santa Clara County, the largest county in the San Francisco Bay Area and the fifth largest county in California. ERA will conduct interviews with seventy-five Mexican women immigrants and seventy-five Vietnamese women immigrant who receive welfare. The interview process will begin in mid-July and finish by the end of October 1998. The result of the study will highlight some of the barriers that immigrant women face under the new law. The study will also identify the unmet needs of low-income immigrant women.
