Program/Policy Description This project examines the circumstances of current and former TANF (CalWORKs) child-only cases in San Mateo and Santa Clara Counties. In particular, we focus on cases where aided children are living with their needy parents, but the parents are ineligible to receive aid due to immigration status (undocumented persons), previous drug convictions, and non-cooperation with child support. The project has three major objectives: (1) determine the economic and life circumstances of children and families in these cases; (2) identify the factors associated with child-only cases that leave assistance; and (3) evaluate the supportive services needed by these families and the take-up of post-assistance benefits for those families that leave the CalWORKs Program.
