FACES is a national longitudinal study of the cognitive, social, emotional, and physical development of Head Start children; the characteristics, well-being, and accomplishments of families; the observed quality of Head Start classrooms; and the characteristics, needs, and opinions of Head Start teachers and other program staff. Each cohort of children is assessed upon entry into the program, at the completion of one or two years of Head Start, and followed up in the Spring of their Kindergarten and First grade years.
FACES is designed to answer four research questions:
1. Does Head Start enhance children's development and school readiness?
2. Does Head Start strengthen families as the primary nurturers of their children?
3. Does Head Start provide children with high quality educational, health and nutritional services?
4. How is the classroom quality related to the child outcomes?
An additional feature of FACES is the Validation Sub-study or embedded case study of a longitudinal sample of 120 randomly selected families from the larger FACES sample (three families from each of the 40 FACES sites were selected). The goal of the case study is to provide a more complete profile of Head Start families and children, their neighborhoods, and the nature of their interactions with Head Start. The FACES case study provides in-depth cross-sectional and longitudinal descriptive data, both qualitative and quantitative, over a two-year period.

n=2,400 children and parents were studied in a nationally stratified random sample of 40 Head Start programs.
Three nationally representative cohorts of Early Head Start children.
Cohort #1:
n = 3200 children and parents from 40 Head Start sites (sampled from the Field test).
Cohort #2:
n = 2800 children and parents from 43 Head Start sites.
Cohort #3:
TBA number of children and parents from 43 Head Start sites.
Sub-study:
